Actor Abhay Deol has turned energy crusader and is building an eco-friendly home in Goa that will have solar panels and rainwater harvesting set-up.

The 38-year-old 'Dev D' star, who bought one acre land in North Goa three years back to build an environment-friendly house, feels such a home will empower him. "I wanted to reduce carbon footprints and also be empowered and independent.

I do not want to be at the mercy of others for power and water," he told PTI in an interview. The actor, who was here at NDTV's programme 'Mission Energy Sessions' on the occasion of World Environment Day, said he is building his home from scratch and wants to get Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certificate for his house.

The actor was among the panelists at the event where experts from the industry highlighted environmental issues while suggesting solutions. "It is a great initiative and what I liked most about it was it showcased great innovations, which gives so much encouragement to these people. It's inspired me and if I am investing in it myself then it will encourage those who are making these," Deol said.

He also plans to add some innovations like a remote-controlled 60 per cent energy-saving fans and a clay fridge that does not need electricity. "We need to stop talking about wanting to make change in future and do things.

We need to see what can be done now. Methods which are practical and feasible should be implemented. Like I am doing my bit by building this eco-friendly home," he said.

The 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' actor said he would also like to work for conservation of environment on larger scale in the future. "I have some ideas. I would like to take up initiatives and campaigns. I will always work on this issue," he said.
